Membership Categories

The ARS offers the following types of membership: 

Member
A physician in good standing who has completed an ACGME-accredited residency program in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery shall be eligible for membership.  
Benefits of membership:

  • Members shall be eligible to vote.
  • Members may serve on one or more committees.
  • Members will receive the IFAR journal.
  • Members will receive a discounted registration rate for the Fall and Spring meetings.

Fellow Member (FARS)
This category is reserved for ARS members that also meet the following qualifications:

  • Diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology (or its equivalent) in good standing.
  • At least 3 years out from completion of residency training,
  • 50 surgical rhinologic cases in a two year time period (Examples of rhinologic cases include endoscopic sinus surgery, external sinus surgery, endoscopic orbital or skull base surgery),
  • Documentation of service to the rhinologic community (Examples include publications in the field of rhinology, involvement in non-industry sponsored educational activities that serve the public, the medical community or training programs)
  • Attendance at least three (3) American Rhinologic Society meetings or ARS-sponsored courses over a 3-year period.
  • Sponsorship by two ARS Fellow (FARS) members in good standing through letters of recommendation. The letter should include specific description of the applicant’s service to the rhinologic community.

Benefits of Fellow Membership:

  • FARS members have the same privileges of regular membership.
  • FARS members are eligible to vote.
  • FARS members may serve on one or more committees.
  • FARS members may hold office.

Resident in Training
A physician in good standing in an ACGME approved Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery residency training program is eligible to be a Resident in Training member for the duration of their residency. This is a non-voting membership category.
Benefits of Resident in Training Membership:

  • Electronic copy of the IFAR journal.
  • Discounted registration to the Spring and Fall meetings.

International Resident in Training
A physician in good standing in a full-time residency training program outside of the US or Canada, acceptable to the Board of Directors.  This is a non-voting membership category.  After completion of the residency, application for a different category of membership can be pursued.
Benefits of Rhinology Fellow In Training Membership:

  • Discounted registration to the Spring and Fall meetings.

Rhinology Fellow In Training
A physician in good standing in an ARS monitored Rhinology fellowship is eligible to be a Fellow in Training member for the duration of their fellowship. This is a non-voting membership category. After completion of fellowship, application for regular membership can be pursued.
Benefits of Rhinology Fellow In Training Membership:

  • Electronic copy of the IFAR journal.
  • Discounted registration to the Spring and Fall meetings.

Fellow in Training (Non-Rhinology)
A physician in good standing in a Fellowship training program in the US or Canada, acceptable to the Board of Directors.  This is a non-voting membership category.  After completion of the fellowship, application for regular membership can be pursued.  This  membership category can not extend beyond 2 years.
Benefits of Rhinology Fellow In Training Membership:

  • Electronic copy of the IFAR journal.
  • Discounted registration to the Spring and Fall meetings.

International Fellow-In-Training
A physician in good standing in a Fellowship training program other than in the US or Canada, acceptable to the Board of Directors.  This is a non-voting membership category.  After completion of the fellowship, application for International membership can be pursued.  This membership category can not extend beyond 2 years.

Benefits of Rhinology Fellow In Training Membership:

  • Discounted registration to the Spring and Fall meetings.

International Member
Any physician who practices the specialty of Rhinology in countries other than the United States and Canada and whose geographical location prohibits regular attendance at ARS meetings. A valid and unrestricted medical license to practice medicine in his or her respective country is required to become an International Member. This is a non-voting membership category. International members are not eligible to hold office.
Benefits of International Membership :

  • Reduced membership fee.
  • Electronic subscription to IFAR.
  • Discounted registration to the Spring and Fall meetings.

International-ERS Member
Any member who meets the requirements of International Membership and is also a member of the European Rhinologic Society.  A valid copy of the ERS membership certificate is required.  This is a non-voting membership category. International members are not eligible to hold office. International-ERS members have the same benefits of Interational membership with a further reduction in the membership fee.

Emeritus Fellow Member
This class of membership is limited to those members who have achieved Fellowship in the American Rhinologic Society, but have retired from the active practice of medicine. Fellows can become Emeritus Fellows upon written request of the Secretary. This is a non-voting membership category. Emeritus members are not eligible to hold office. An Emeritus shall have all of the other privileges of regular membership. Emeritus members shall not be required to pay dues or assessments.  
Benefits of Emeritus Membership :

Affiliate Member
Any individual who has a professional association with a regular, fellow, honorary or charter member shall be eligible for Affiliate membership. This is a non-voting membership category. Affiliate members are not eligible to serve on any committee (other than in an advisory capacity) or hold office.
Examples of people that qualify for Affiliate Membership:

  • Nurses
  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Physician Assistants
  • PhDs
  • Research/Lab assistants
  • Physicians that completed training in fields other than Otolaryngology

Affiliate Member (Industry/Corporate)
An individual currently employed by an industry or corporation who has a professional association with a regular, fellow, honorary or charter member shall be eligible for Affiliate (Industry/Corporate) membership.  This is a non-voting membership category. Affiliate members are not eligible to serve on any committee (other than in an advisory capacity) or hold office.  Affiliate (Industry/Corporate) will receive an electronic version of the journal.

Medical Student
A medical student in good standing currently enrolled in an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada or US Territories. This is a non-voting membership category. Medical students are not eligible to serve on a committee or hold office.
