The fellowship was formed to further the rhinologic training of our craft group and ensure the highest quality of rhinologic care within the community. OVERVIEW OF FELLOWSHIPThe Fellowship provides exposure to both medical and surgical rhinology. Rhinoplasty and nasal reconstruction (and additional facial plastics if needed) are a core part of this. The fellowship also provides assistance in the medical and surgical care for rhinology patients admitted to the hospital, those in the outpatient clinic and those undergoing surgery under the care of the fellowship supervisors. FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTIONDuring your time in Sydney you will:
The Fellow will work under the supervision of Prof Ray Sacks (Concord General, Macquarie University Hospital and Sydney Adventist Hospitals), Dr George Marcells (Sydney and Bondi Junction Private Hospitals) and Prof Richard Harvey (Macquarie University Hospital and St Vincent’s Public and Private Hospitals). The Fellowship provides exposure to both medical and surgical rhinology. Rhinoplasty and nasal reconstruction (and additional facial plastics if needed) are a core part of this. Dr George Marcells, co-director of the fellowship, works at Sydney Hospital and Bondi Junction Private and currently performs 2-3 rhinoplasties a week. He is considered one of Sydney’s preeminent tertiary referral rhinoplasty surgeons. Research and presentation at international meetings is an important part of the Fellowship. It is designed for someone wanting to develop a career in academic medicine and continuing research interests. Tertiary hospital placement would be expected after the fellowship and we would provide as much assistance as possible to see the fellow was positioned appropriately. Involvement in local and international meetings will help to build a strong relationship with the international rhinologic community. Trainees interested in the fellowship as a stepping stone to ‘private practice only’ are not encouraged to apply. Weekly Schedule:Research Responsibilities:Clinical research projects are expected. Basic science projects are optional and can be developed on request. A minimum of two (2) publications along with presentations at national and international meetings in expected. Research opportunities do not include lab work – the fellowship is heavily loaded to clinical/surgical experience. However, close collaboration is encouraged with those working in our lab. Projects will be based in the following areas depending on interest:
Diversity of Cases:Inflammatory rhinology, severe disease, nasal airway surgery, orbital and DCR surgery,pituitary surgery, complex skull base, open/external reconstructive and cosmetic rhinoplasty. The following is the case mix of the 2014-2015 fellowship year (440 total).
Call Schedule:No on-call commitments. Additional Information:The fellow will assist with the three (3) rhinological courses at St Vincent’s Hospital:
The fellow will also attend a fortnightly rhinology conference. Salary is provided via private assisting fees. A service is setup to allow easy billing. This approximates $90,000/year and there is a 3 month delay before initial income is received. Duration: 1 year (July to June) Location:
