Shikani MD, FACS, FARS DEPARTMENTAL MISSION STATEMENTThe aim of the fellowship is to offer a high-quality one-year subspecialty training program in Rhinology. The fellowship experience will include exposure to all aspects of medical and surgical rhinology and related disciplines, in adults and children, including endoscopic sinus surgery, treatment of olfactory disorders, functional nasal surgery & treatment of nasal obstruction, cosmetic nasal surgery, approaches to the pituitary, and removal of paranasal sinus neoplasms. The fellowship may also provide opportunities for clinical research in Rhinology. At the present time, our research program consists of three IRB-approved studies focused on topical therapy for chronic rhinosinusitis and balloon sinuplasty (Rhinotopic therapy), tracheotomy speaking valves and HMEs. For further information about the fellowship and faculty, please visit the website http://www.marylandent.com FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTIONClinical Rotations:The fellow’s rotations will cover two large MedStar institutions in Baltimore (Union Memorial Hospital and the Good Samaritan Hospital) and a LifeBridge institution (Sinai Hospital). Weekly Schedule:The fellow’s responsibility is to attend the ENT clinic at least three days per week, where he/she will do, under the supervision of the ENT attending staff, thorough evaluation and complete examination of patients, perform ENT and rhinology office procedures under local anesthesia (including in-office sinuplasty, minor endoscopic sinus surgery, coblation of inferior turbinates, nasal endoscopy, laryngoscopy, endoscopic nasal biopsy, etc.), provide treatment and appropriate follow up, as indicated and under supervision of the attending physician. The fellow will also have the opportunity to scrub in the OR with any of the attending physicians, at least two half- days a week. Research Responsibilities:The fellowship will also provide opportunities for clinical research in Rhinology, covering different aspects of nasal/sinus/airway diseases. Our current clinical research program revolves around novel techniques in topical therapy for chronic rhinosinusitis and balloon sinuplasty (Rhinotopic therapy), tracheotomy speaking valves and HMEs. FacultyAlan H Shikani MD, FACS:Dr Shikani completed his residency and fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, the top-ranked ENT program for the last 20 years. Dr Shikani is currently Chief of Otolaryngology at Union Memorial Hospital, Chief of Otolaryngology at Good Samaritan Hospital and Chief of Otolaryngology at Sinai Hospital. He is also the Director of the Maryland Nose and Sinus Rhinology Fellowship Program at Union Memorial Hospital. Dr. Shikani is also an active member of many distinguished societies including the Alpha Omega Honor Medical Society, American Academy of Facial Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Otolaryngology, and the American Rhinological Society. Dr. Shikani has published numerous articles and book chapters in the field of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck surgery and is the recipient of the prestigious Maurice H. Cottle Award presented by the American Rhinological Society. He holds twenty one patents in his name either individually or as a co-inventor, and has made multiple ENT inventions and brought several devices to market. Abraham Gol, MD:Abraham Gol MD is a board-certified Otolaryngologist. He completed 5 years of general otolaryngology training at the University of Minnesota where he obtained extensive experience treating all types of disease processes affecting the face, ears, nose, neck, and throat. At the University of Minnesota, he learned from leading surgeons in the fields of cancer treatment, sinus disease, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, laryngeal surgery, pediatric otolaryngology, and ear surgery. He developed a special interest in pediatric and developmental disorders and pursued additional training as a Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellow at the University of California - Davis. During fellowship, he received extensive experience treating developmental disorders such as cleft lip and cleft palate, microtia (a developmentally small or unformed ear), cleft nasal deformities, micrognathia (a small jaw that could result in sleep apnea in a baby), acquired or developmental hearing loss, craniosynostosis (premature fusion of the sutures in the head resulting in abnormal head shape), pediatric vascular and lymphatic malformations, pediatric head and neck masses, sleep apnea, and pediatric and adult airway stenosis.Dr. Gol has strong academic interests and has worked on several research projects ranging from hearing loss and ear tumors, to pediatric airway anomalies, to management of children with cleft palates. Diversity of Cases:The fellow surgical duties will include accompanying the attending physician in the operating room at least two days per week and performing surgery and/or assisting in surgical procedures as indicated, and under supervision of the attending physician. By graduation, the fellow should have knowledge and proficiency in most of the following nasal surgical procedures: Call Schedule:The Rhinology fellow takes call covering Union Memorial, Good Samaritan and Sinai emergency room and floor consultations. The call’s duration is one week at a time, and rotates every other week (always in tandem with one ENT attending physician). Additional Responsibilities:Rhinology fellows, in accordance with the Institutional vacation policy, receive a maximum of three weeks off work per year. Two weeks are a guaranteed vacation time and the other week is to be used for meetings and conferences. All vacation time must be logged/tracked by both the fellow and the department; approval must be given by the Program Director or his designee prior to the start of the vacation. CURRENT AND PAST FELLOWSDiptarka Bhattachyya, MD 2018-2019 REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENTFive years of Otolaryngology residency in the US or abroad; USMLE 1, 2 and 3 APPLICATION INFORMATIONApplications are processed through the SF match, and should be submitted through www.sfmatch.org.
