COSM and Chicago to Host ARS Spring Meeting
By Howard L. Levine M.D.
President-Elect, American Rhinologic Society
Chairman, Program Committee

Save the date! An exciting meeting of the American Rhinologic Society is being planned for the afternoon of May 19 and morning of May 20, 2006 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Chicago, Illinois. This meeting, as always, is part of the Combined Otolaryngologic Spring Meetings (COSM).

In preparation for the meeting, the ARS program committee with difficulty chose 36 papers from the nearly 60 outstanding clinical and basic science abstracts to create the exceptional oral and poster presentations for the two half-day sessions.

Papers and posters will discus innovative and creative approaches to practical and complex nasal and sinus problems. Basic science papers will reveal the insight and direction our specialty is taking in understanding the ever so increasing complexity of rhinology. As always, papers will have formal discussants to provide their analysis and there will be opportunity for questions and comment from the audience.

The poster session will allow attendees to acquire new information in a causal manner at their own pace.

Two panels will present valuable and practical information to practicing otolaryngologists. One panel of senior respected member rhinologists will address the challenging question of "Indications for Endoscopic Sinus Surgery". This will review the current guidelines from our societies and also discuss the controversial areas.

Michael Setzen, MD, Chairman of the ARS Patient Advocacy Committee will once again moderate a panel on the popular and important topic of "Coding Issues in Rhinology". This panel remains a constant part of the ARS program because of the useful information it provides to every otolaryngology office. The ARS Patient Advocacy Committee is a resource to all ARS members via the website, articles in this newsletter and through our Spring and Fall programs.

And if all of this would not be an information filled meeting, there are plans for a Saturday morning breakfast symposium on the emerging technology for the diagnosis and the current thoughts on the relationship of "Rhinology and Reflux." Rhinology experts will discuss and debate the importance and role of reflux in our practices.

The ARS Spring meeting is also a time to recognize some of our colleague's achievements. The $1000 ARS Research Award will be presented for the best paper and presentation at the meeting.

None of the meeting planning and preparation can be done without the Program Committee. Special thanks for this program must go to the hard working members of that committee. Diligence and care was given by these members who in a short time period sorted through and ranked all of the excellent abstract submissions. These members are: David Conley, John DelGaudio, Peter Doble, Joseph Han, Peter Hwang, Todd Kingdom, Stilianos Kountakis, Todd Loehrl, Richard Orlandi, Jim Palmer, and Richard Swain. Also, a very special remembrance, praise and thank you must go to Kelvin Lee who has been a Program Committee member for many years and suddenly passed away this Fall. Our thoughts will be with him during this meeting.

Look for more details about the program over the next few months through our newsletter, mailings and website. I look forward to seeing you in Chicago!
