President's Message

Marvin Fried, MD

The last Annual Meeting of the American Rhinologic Society, held in Washington, DC, was a spectacular success! The quality of the presentations, their breadth and impact was truly impressive. The basic science and clinical topics were of obvious interest to the audience, as reflected by the number of individuals staying throughout the day. The quality of the submissions made the work of the Program Committee a true pleasure. I would like to thank them for all of their efforts. These included Drs. Alex Chiu, Noam Cohen, Karen Fong, Hong-Ryul Jin, Stephanie Joe, Todd Kingdom, Richard Lebowitz, Howard Levine, James Palmer, Sanjay Parikh, Rodney Schlosser, Brent Senior and James Stankiewicz . Moreover, the international panel on the "Approach to the Pituitary Gland," moderated by Jan Gosepath, was very well received. This also was true for the patient advocacy discussion of coding dilemmas with Michael Setzen and Mary LeGrand. For me having Gerald Healy as the Keynote Speaker discussing the issues facing all of surgery, was truly a special occasion. It is also resonated with many of our members who also found the presentation very thought provoking.

The Monday session with the American Academy of Otolaryngologic Allergy, which was on the subject of the "Unified Airway," was a major success. Not only was the subject matter thoroughly discussed, but it also allowed our two societies to interact in way that we have not been able to do before. I want to thank Paul Fass, M.D., and the leadership of both the AAOA and ARS for making this combined session happen. Moreover, Jami Lucas and Wendi Perez, the administrators of our two societies were critical in this effort. The Monday session was also the venue for the David Kennedy, M.D. Lectureship, and Jim Zinreich, M.D. gave an outstanding overview of the history and current status of imaging in rhinology.

I want to thank the outgoing members of the Council for all of their efforts. These include Thomas Tami, Peter Hwang, Peter Doble, Todd Kingdom, James Palmer, Stilianos Kountakis, Karen Fong, and Allen Seiden. I also welcome our new consultants to the Board, Neil Bhattacharyya, and Paul Toffel.

Under the leadership of Seth Brown, a new Resident and Fellows Committee has been organized to focus on the needs of these particular physicians. We hope that the ARS can fill an educational and social role. Already the first gathering, held at our Annual Meeting, was well attended and received. Future efforts of this group will, I am certain, enhance the enthusiasm in the ARS and encourage membership.

The ARS extends its appreciation to Xoran Technologies and Oceanside Press for supporting our Senior Resident initiative. Their gifts enabled all Otolaryngology Senior Residents to join the American Rhinologic Society and simultaneously be provided with a complimentary subscription to the American Journal of Rhinology. This program has been highly successful with over 300 residents participating.

I look forward to seeing you in Orlando at a beautiful venue. The JW Marriott Grand Lakes will be a wonderful place to meet and enjoy the local sights. The program committee has been working on creating an exciting an invigorating meeting. The COSM program will be highlighted by a co-sponsored session/panel with ASPO on "Treatment of CRS in Children". We have received numerous excellent abstracts featuring skull base surgery, balloon sinuplasty rhinoplasty, allergy, surgery of CRS and excellent basic science papers.

I am certain that this will be a continued year of growth for the ARS in its education and research mission and its advocacy for our membership and patients.
