News -> Febuary, 2001 News
As we enter the year 2001, the American Rhinologic Society is doing wonderful things for the advancement of rhinology for its membership. Under the exemplary stewardship of Dr. Charles Gross last year, and the direction of Dr. Eugene Kern, the ARS helped put on the Nose 2000 meeting in Washington, D.C., probably the most successful rhinologic meeting ever held in North America.
Dr. Fred Kuhn, our in-coming President, and Dr. David Kennedy, our Treasurer, have done a marvelous job in the socioeconomic arena, clarifying the status of the coding controversies regarding stereotactic computer-aided navigation, and seeing to it that appropriate compensation weight is given to our member's excellent rhinologic surgeries, in the context of contributing to our patient's health. Dr. Don Lanza, our First Vice President, is continuing to organize the Committees as they dial up, thanks to the original campaign of our former president, Dr. Michael Benninger. And this year we hope that our Committees will be introducing many of the younger members of our Society to the leadership of the organization. Dr. Joseph Jacobs, of New York, a senior member of the Board of Directors, has worked tirelessly to direct his Socioeconomic Committee to improve the problems of inadequate reimbursement for septal and turbinate procedures combined with endoscopic sinus surgery, and he has made substantial progress.
Dr. James Stankiewicz, also on the Board of Directors, has also worked tirelessly to maintain the excellent accreditation of our Society for the many wonderful scientific educational programs that we've undertaken. This has been a thankless job, and we have maintained our accreditation for four full years. Dr. Fred Stucker, our outgoing Secretary, has worked with the Executive Committee and Board of Directors in exemplary fashion to ease the transition for our new Secretary, Dr. Marvin Fried of New York. Dr. J. David Osguthorpe has done a truly remarkable job in producing a high-quality newsletter for our members, which has also been distributed to the entire body of otolaryngology, and we are very grateful for his tireless efforts. Dr. Martin Citardi has brought our ARS website up-to-speed, and we are pleased to see that we are now able to do our scientific meeting abstracts via the internet module with very few glitches, now tested with the Nose 2000 meeting, and our upcoming COSM meeting in May. The younger members of the Board of Directors are participating actively in the guidance of our Society and the development of outstanding and timely scientific programs. Our future leadership appears to be outstanding.
With COSM fast approaching, I wanted to let you know that through the hard work of your Program Committee, consisting of Drs. Daniel Becker, Michael Benninger, William Bolger, Donald Leopold, and myself, we have put together an exciting program for the Spring Meeting in Palm Desert, California. We will meet in conjunction with the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy/Foundation on the afternoon of Sunday, May 13, 2001, with the feature panel ("Management of Middle and Inferior Turbinates in ESS") led by Dr. Dale Rice. On Monday, May 14th's program, I will lead a panel on "Integration of Computer-Assisted Surgery Into ESS Practice." Later in the day will be an international panel, moderated by Dr. Aldo Stamm of Sao Paulo, Brazil, with Dr. Valerie Lund from England, and Dr. Jean-Michel Klossek from France. They will speak on "Transnasal Micro-Endoscopic Surgery of the Paranasal Sinuses and the Skull Base." To finish out our meeting, we will meet in conjunction with the Triologic Society on Tuesday morning, May 15. This will include a panel on "Evolution of Surgical Indications and the Management of Sinus Disease," featuring the great minds of Drs. Fred Kuhn, David Kennedy, Charles Gross, and again, Dr. Valerie Lund. Our Distinguished Speaker Lecture will be Dr. Aldo Stamm, on "Transnasal Endoscopic Surgery Ð From Minimal to Maximal," featuring some of most beautiful videos in the world. In addition to the fabulous panels I've outlined, we are happy to have a total of 35 papers for presentation during the three meeting days. Time restraints did not allow us to include a number of other interesting papers, which were submitted, but we thank all authors for their contributions to rhinology.
On behalf of the ARS membership, I want to thank the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee for quickly solving several issues of socioeconomic importance, and we will bring these to the Society during our COSM business meeting. This should not only be an exciting and informative meeting for all rhinologists, but should provide ample time for good fellowship and fun in the Southern California desert scenery.
Looking forward to seeing you all in Palm Desert!
Paul H. Toffel, M.D.
